About this tour

The Full Circuit Spiti Valley A Himalayan Dream Expedition – 9 Nights / 10 Days

Spiti Valley is one of those places that people talk about for years after visiting. Sitting at an average altitude of 3,800 metres in the cold desert of the Trans-Himalayas, it is technically in India but feels like a completely different world. Barren mountains in shades of brown, orange, and ochre. River valleys so deep they swallow the light. Villages so remote that the outside world feels genuinely far away. And a sky at night so thick with stars that first-timers often just stand outside and stare in silence.

This Spiti Valley Full Circuit covers the complete loop — entering through the green, river-carved Kinnaur valley via Shimla and exiting through the high-altitude drama of Kunzum Pass into Manali. It is the most rewarding way to experience Spiti Valley because you see the entire picture. The lush Sangla Valley and India’s last village, Chitkul on the Indo-Tibet border on the way in.

The ancient monasteries of Tabo and Dhankar, the frozen landscapes around Gue and Nako, and the high-altitude villages of Langza, Hikkim, and Komic through Spiti proper. And finally Chandratal Lake under the stars before dropping into Manali.

How long is the Spiti circuit? The full loop from Delhi covers approximately 1,800 to 2,000 km over 10 days and 9 nights — entering via Shimla and Kinnaur and exiting via Kunzum Pass and Manali. This is the most complete Spiti Valley Full Circuit itinerary available and one of the most thorough Spiti Valley tour packages from Delhi.

What is Spiti full circuit and half circuit? The half circuit either enters and exits via Shimla or enters and exits via Manali — covering only one side of the valley. The full circuit does the complete loop, entering one side and exiting the other, which is the only way to experience both the Kinnaur route and core Spiti Valley in a single trip. This is always the recommended option for anyone with 10 days available.

What makes this Spiti Valley Full Circuit road trip different from a standard Spiti Valley tour package is the depth of coverage. Most groups rush through Kinnaur to get to Kaza. This route does not. You spend a proper night in Chitkul. You visit Kalpa and see the Kinner Kailash range directly. You stay in Nako and walk its ancient lake in the morning.

You visit the Indo-Tibet border at Kaurik — a destination that most Spiti trips never include. You walk through Gue, Tabo, and Dhankar before ever reaching Kaza. And you go deeper still into places like Lalung Monastery and Mud Village in Pin Valley — locations that most Spiti Valley travellers skip entirely but that tell the complete story of this region more honestly than any highlight reel can.

Is Kalpa part of the Spiti circuit? Yes. Kalpa in Kinnaur is a core stop on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit route, sitting directly on the approach road between Shimla and Kaza. The views of Kinner Kailash from Kalpa are among the finest mountain vistas on the entire circuit and not something to rush through.

The trip runs as a group expedition with fixed departure dates, led by an experienced Trip Captain with wilderness first aid training. Accommodation is a carefully chosen mix of budget hotels, village homestays, and one night of camping at Chandratal Lake, plus a stay at The Outpost Hallan Valley — a boutique offbeat property in Hallan Valley, Manali. Meals are included at every stay. The pace is built for genuine acclimatisation without sacrificing coverage.

If you have been searching for a Spiti Valley trip from Delhi, a Spiti Valley Full Circuit itinerary, a complete Kinnaur Spiti tour package, or the most thorough 10-day Himalayan road trip available — this is the one.

🍽 Meals: Breakfast at own expense in Shimla · Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Homestay in Sangla or Chitkul
📝 Note: This is a long transit day after an overnight bus. Rest during the drive. Roads through Kinnaur are narrow with sheer drops — motion sickness medication is strongly advised
Highlights: Rock Tunnel, Sangla Valley, Rakcham Bridge, Chitkul — India's last village

<span> Day 3 </span> Sangla · Chitkul · Kalpa · Nako — Valley to Valley 🍏 🏔

🌅 Morning in Chitkul:

  • 🍳 Traditional breakfast at the homestay
  • 🚶 Early village walk — the quietest and most beautiful time in Chitkul
  • 🌊 Baspa River banks — the clearest glacial water in Kinnaur with Kinner Kailash reflected in the shallows
  • 📸 Mountain photography at golden hour

🚗 Drive to Kalpa:

  • 🍏 Route passes through apple and apricot orchards lining the Kinnaur valley
  • 🌄 Suicide Point — a vertiginous viewpoint over the gorge with the Sutlej River far below
  • 🏘 Roghi Village — a traditional Kinnauri settlement with characteristic wood and slate architecture
  • 🛕 Kalpa MonasteryBuddhist monastery with unobstructed Kinner Kailash range views directly across the valley

🚗 Drive to Nako:

  • 🏜 Landscape begins its dramatic shift from green Kinnaur valleys to stark Trans-Himalayan terrain — one of the most visually striking transitions on the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 🌊 Nako village and lake come into view as you climb — ancient, sparse, and completely still
  • 🏘 Settle into Nako — one of the highest inhabited villages in Kinnaur district

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Homestay in Nako (~3,662 m)
📝 Note: Nako is significantly higher than Sangla/Chitkul. Take it slow on arrival, drink plenty of water, eat light, and avoid strenuous activity. Altitude awareness starts here
Highlights: Chitkul morning walk, Baspa River, Suicide Point, Roghi Village, Kalpa Monastery, Nako Lake arrival

🌅 Morning at Nako:

  • 🌊 Early walk around Nako Lake — still water reflecting snow peaks in the morning silence
  • 🛕 Visit Nako Monastery — ancient Buddhist murals and centuries-old monastic atmosphere

🪖 Kaurik — The Indo-Tibet Border:

  • 🏔 Drive toward Kaurik — a destination that most Spiti Valley trips never include and most Spiti Valley Full Circuit travellers never reach
  • 🇨🇳 Indo-Tibet border visit at Kaurik — subject to weather conditions and administrative clearance from the Indian Army on the day. When it opens, this is one of the most exclusive stops on any Spiti Full Circuit. Standing at an active Indo-Tibet border post in one of the most remote landscapes in India is an experience with no equivalent anywhere else on the route
  • 📋 Border visits are never guaranteed — clearance depends on the army and local administration on that specific day. When not possible, the surrounding Trans-Himalayan landscape at this altitude is extraordinary in its own right

🛕 Gue, Tabo, and Dhankar:

  • 💀 Gue Monastery — home to the remarkably preserved 500-year-old mummified body of a Buddhist Lama. Hair, teeth, and skin still largely intact — a genuinely singular encounter on any Spiti Valley itinerary
  • 🌅 The Trans-Himalayan desert fully reveals itself beyond Gue — brown, vast, and silent
  • 🛕 Tabo Monastery — founded in 996 AD, one of the oldest continuously operating Buddhist monasteries in the world. Ancient murals in the cave chambers, a living monastic community, and an atmosphere that earns the Ajanta of the Himalayas comparison without exaggeration
  • 🏯 Dhankar Monastery — perched on a crumbling cliff above the Spiti and Pin river confluence, one of the most dramatically situated monasteries in India

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Stay in Dhankar or Tabo
📝 Note: Common washrooms with hot water buckets are standard at high-altitude homestays in this area. The Kaurik border visit is confirmed by the Trip Captain on the morning of Day 4 based on clearance received
Highlights: Nako Lake morning, Kaurik Indo-Tibet border, Gue mummified Lama, Tabo Monastery, Dhankar cliff monastery

<span> Day 5 </span> Dhankar · Lalung · Mud Village · Lingti · Kaza — The Spiti Most People Miss 🏜 🌊

🌅 Morning Departure from Dhankar:

  • 🍳 Early breakfast and check-out
  • 🛕 Lalung Monastery — one of the oldest and most rarely visited monasteries in all of Spiti Valley. Most Spiti Valley tour packages skip it entirely. The ancient frescoes here are in remarkable condition, the atmosphere is completely undisturbed, and on most days you will have the place almost entirely to yourself. If Tabo is the famous ancient monastery of Spiti, Lalung is the one that only people who truly know the valley ever reach

🚗 Into Pin Valley:

  • 🏘 Mud Village, Pin Valley — the main village at the entrance to Pin Valley National Park, home to one of the highest populations of snow leopards in India. A traditional Spiti Valley village in the truest sense — unchanged, unhurried, and almost entirely off the mainstream Spiti travel circuit. Most groups drive past the Pin Valley turnoff without stopping. Getting here and understanding that this quiet settlement sits at the edge of genuine snow leopard habitat is exactly the kind of stop that separates a real Spiti Full Circuit from a highlight tour
  • 🌊 Lingti Waterfall — a striking cascade cutting through the otherwise dry and barren Spiti landscape. One of Spiti Valley's most underrated natural stops

🏙 Arrival in Kaza:

  • 🏙 Kaza — the administrative capital of Spiti Valley at 3,800 m
  • 🛒 Free time to explore the local market, visit the Sakya Monastery in town, and rest
  • 📶 Best mobile connectivity of the entire Spiti Valley trip — Jio and BSNL both work reliably here
  • 💰 Withdraw cash from the ATM in Kaza — this is the last ATM before Manali

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Hotel or guesthouse in Kaza
📝 Note: Withdraw sufficient cash in Kaza without fail. Minimum Rs 5,000 recommended for personal expenses from this point onward
Highlights: Lalung Monastery, Mud Village in Pin Valley, Lingti Waterfall, arrival in Kaza

<span> Day 6 </span> Kaza Circuit — Key · Hikkim · Langza · Komic 🛕 📮

🌅 Morning — The Iconic Monastery:

  • 🍳 Breakfast at hotel
  • 🏯 Key Monastery — the largest, most iconic, and most photographed monastery in Spiti Valley. Sitting at 4,166 m above the valley floor with the Spiti River snaking below, it is the defining image of the entire region and a non-negotiable stop on every Spiti Valley Full Circuit

🌄 Afternoon — The Highest Villages:

  • 📮 Hikkim — the world's highest post office at 4,440 m. Post a card to someone who will appreciate knowing exactly where it was sent from
  • 🚀 Komic — one of the highest motorable villages in the world. A handful of houses, a small monastery, and a view that takes several seconds to process fully
  • 🦖 Langza — the fossil village of Spiti. Marine fossils embedded in the hillsides above 4,400 m tell the story of an ancient seabed that became the Himalayas. A giant Buddha statue overlooks the entire Spiti Valley floor

🌆 Evening:

  • 🔭 Return to Kaza · Rooftop star-gazing at 3,800 m — some of the clearest skies in India

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Homestay in Kaza
📝 Note: Most stops today are above 4,000 m. Move slowly, breathe deliberately, drink water consistently, and inform the Trip Captain immediately if you feel unwell
Highlights: Key Monastery, Hikkim Post Office, Langza fossil village, Komic

<span> Day 7 </span> Kaza · Chicham · Kibbar · Kunzum Pass · Chandratal / Sissu — The Big Day 🌉 🏔 🌌

🌄 Early Departure from Kaza:

  • 🍳 Breakfast and check-out by 6:00 AM sharp
  • 🚗 Early start is essential — this is the longest and most dramatic day of the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 📏 Total distance: approximately 115 km to Chandratal · Duration: 7 to 9 hours depending on stops and road conditions

🌉 Chicham Bridge:

  • 🌉 Chicham BridgeAsia's highest bridge, spanning a dramatic gorge between two sheer cliff faces at 4,450 m. The engineering is extraordinary, the drop is real, and the views from the bridge are unlike anything else on the Spiti Full Circuit. Walk across slowly and look down exactly once

🦌 Kibbar Village:

  • 🦌 Kibbar — one of the highest motorable villages in the world and one of the best-known locations in India for snow leopard sightings. The village sits at approximately 4,200 m with panoramic views across the Spiti Valley floor. A living, working settlement where families have farmed barley and grazed animals at altitude for generations. Walking through Kibbar before the big drive ahead is one of the quietest, most grounding moments on the entire circuit

🏔 Kunzum Pass (4,551 m):

  • 🛕 Brief stop at Kunzum Mata Temple — tradition says you circle the temple before crossing the pass
  • 🌬 Views of multiple glaciers from the pass on clear days — one of the highest and most dramatic road crossings in the Indian Himalayas
  • 📏 Kunzum Pass sits at 4,551 m — the highest point of the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit

🍛 Batal — Chacha-Chachi Dhaba:

  • 🍛 The most famous roadside meal stop on any Spiti Valley road trip. Simple dal and rice at a dhaba in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by glacial moraines and high-altitude wilderness. Chacha and Chachi have been feeding Spiti circuit travellers for decades — this stop is earned

🌌 Primary Option — Chandratal Lake (Weather or Availability Dependent):

  • 🌊 Arrive at Chandratal — the Moon Lake at 4,300 m
  • 🏕 Set up camp at the designated Chandratal campsite
  • 🌌 Evening at the lake shore — the sky at this altitude with zero light pollution is something Chandratal photographs simply cannot capture
  • 🌙 Night temperatures drop to minus 5 to minus 10 even in summer — sleeping bags and thermals are not optional

🏡 Alternate Option — Sissu :

  • 🏘 If Chandratal is inaccessible due to weather, permit issues, or campsite unavailability, the group stays in Sissu in Lahaul Valley
  • 🏔 Sissu-based groups cover Rohtang Pass the following morning — Chandratal groups do not

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Camp at Chandratal Lake or guesthouse in Sissu
📝 Note: Day 7 is the most demanding day of the Spiti Full Circuit — an early start is non-negotiable. Chandratal camping is subject to weather, road conditions, and permit availability. Sissu is a comfortable and scenic alternate — the Trip Captain's decision on this is based on real-time safety and logistical conditions
Highlights: Chicham Bridge, Kibbar Village, Kunzum Pass, Chacha-Chachi Dhaba at Batal, Chandratal Lake under the stars (or Sissu as an alternate with Rohtang Pass)

<span> Day 8 </span> Chandratal / Sissu to Manali — Back to the World 🏔 🚗

🌅 Morning:

  • 🌊 Sunrise at Chandratal Lake if camping — worth every cold and sleepless minute
  • 🏔 Rohtang Pass visit for Sissu-based groups only — not covered if the group camped at Chandratal
  • 🚗 Drive down through Lahaul Valley
  • 🚇 Atal Tunnel9 km, the world's longest high-altitude road tunnel at 3,100 m. Temperature and landscape change noticeably the moment you exit on the Kullu side

🏡 Check-in at The Outpost Hallan Valley:

  • 🏡 Check-in at The Outpost Hallan Valley — a boutique offbeat property set in the quiet, forested Hallan Valley away from the noise and crowds of main Manali town
  • 🌲 A genuinely different experience after days of remote homestays and campsites — clean rooms, comfortable beds, and a property that feels like a considered choice rather than a default hotel
  • 🌆 Free evening to rest, decompress, and enjoy the forested setting of Hallan Valley

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: The Outpost Hallan Valley, Manali
📝 Note: Rest and recovery matter on Day 8. Save energy and enthusiasm for the full Day 9 ahead
Highlights: Chandratal sunrise or Rohtang Pass, Atal Tunnel, The Outpost Hallan Valley

🌅 Morning:

  • 🍳 Breakfast at The Outpost Hallan Valley and late check-out
  • 🎯 Group decides the day — both options run based on preference:

Option A — Manali Local Sightseeing:

  • 🛕 Hadimba Devi Temple — an ancient wooden temple in a deodar cedar forest, built in 1553
  • 🏘 Old Manali village walk — apple orchards, guesthouses, cafés, and a slower pace

Option B — Adventure Activities in Kullu:

  • 🪂 Paragliding at Kullu Valley — tandem flights with Himalayan views below
  • 🌊 River rafting on the Beas — Grade 2 to 3 rapids through the Kullu Valley
  • (All adventure activities in Kullu are paid directly and not included in the package)

  • 🚌 Board the Volvo for the overnight journey back to Delhi · Departure typically between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM

🍽 Meals: Breakfast included
🛏 Overnight: On the Volvo bus
📝 Note: Inform the Trip Captain of your sightseeing or activity preference by Day 8 evening for coordination. Adventure activities run 2 to 4 hours — wrap up before the Mall Road session. Do not book onward trains or flights from Delhi early on Day 10 morning
Highlights: Hadimba Temple, Old Manali or Kullu Valley, adventure activities of choice, Mall Road last stroll, group farewell photos, departure to Delhi

<span> Day 10</span> Morning Arrival in Delhi — The Spiti Full Circuit Complete 🏙

🌅 Morning Arrival:

  • 🚌 Arrive Delhi between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM depending on road and traffic conditions
  • 🤝 Group dispersal at the designated Delhi drop point
  • 📸 The quiet moment of realising you just completed a Spiti Valley Full Circuit

🍽 Meals: None included
📝 Note: Do not schedule early morning flights, trains, or important commitments on Day 10. Volvo arrivals from Manali can run 1 to 2 hours late due to highway traffic. Keep a minimum 4-hour buffer for any onward travel
Trip ends. The mountains were real. Come back.

🚩 Available Trip Options

  • Delhi to Delhi — 10 Days / 9 Nights, Spiti Valley Full Circuit via Kinnaur, Spiti, and Manali
  • Fixed group departure dates — check the current schedule for upcoming Spiti Valley Full Circuit batches
  • Solo travellers welcome — placed with a compatible group on departure
  • Minimum group size applies — trips may be consolidated with another batch if needed

🌡️ Weather and Temperature

  • Summer Days (June to September): 5°C to 20°C across Spiti Valley. Days are pleasant but evenings cool sharply at altitude
  • Nights: Minus 5°C to minus 10°C even in peak summer at elevations above 4,000 m. Layered thermals are non-negotiable on every night of this trip
  • Chandratal Nights: Can drop to minus 10°C or below even in July — a sleeping bag rated for minus 10°C or lower is mandatory for all participants
  • Weather Dependency: Road conditions, pass accessibility, and campsite availability are entirely weather-dependent. The Trip Captain holds full authority to modify the itinerary in the interest of group safety — these decisions are final and non-negotiable

🏔 Altitude and Acclimatisation

  • Gradual Ascent: The Spiti Valley Full Circuit route is deliberately structured to allow safe acclimatisation — beginning at Shimla, gaining altitude steadily through Kinnaur, and entering core Spiti Valley only after the body has had time to adjust
  • Maximum Altitude: 4,551 m at Kunzum Pass. Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) — headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite — are possible above 3,000 m and must be reported to the Trip Captain immediately
  • Diamox: Widely recommended by doctors for high-altitude travel in Spiti Valley. Consult your physician before the trip and carry a prescription if advised
  • Medical Fitness: This trip is not suitable for participants with serious cardiac, pulmonary, or hypertensive conditions. A doctor's clearance is strongly recommended for anyone with pre-existing health concerns
  • Fitness Requirement: Participants should be able to walk 3 to 5 km on uneven terrain without difficulty. No technical trekking experience required

🚗 Road and Transportation

  • Vehicles: Volvo 9600 for Delhi to Shimla and Manali to Delhi legs. Tempo Traveller for all mountain driving from Shimla onward — AC is not operational in mountain terrain as per standard practice and safety protocol
  • Road Conditions: Mountain roads on the Spiti Full Circuit are narrow, unmetalled in sections, and carry real exposure on one side. These are active PWD and BRO roads — not tourist highways. Participants with severe motion sickness should carry appropriate medication
  • Road Closures: Kunzum Pass and Kinnaur sections can close without notice due to snowfall, landslides, or BRO operations. BackpackerXP will reroute where possible but extended stays may occur
  • Luggage Policy: One 40 to 50 litre soft backpack per participant. Hard suitcases, oversized bags, and excess luggage cannot be accommodated in the Tempo Traveller and will not travel with the group
  • BackpackerXP Vehicle Standards: All vehicles used are regularly serviced, insured, and operated by experienced mountain drivers with working knowledge of Spiti Valley road conditions

🏠 Accommodation Standards

  • Stay Mix: Budget hotels in Kaza, authentic village homestays in Chitkul, Nako, and Dhankar, camping at Chandratal Lake, and a boutique offbeat stay at The Outpost Hallan Valley in Hallan Valley, Manali
  • Remote Area Standards: Homestays in Chitkul, Nako, and Dhankar offer clean, basic accommodation consistent with their remote location. Participants should not expect urban hotel standards at these properties
  • Common Facilities: At certain high-altitude stays in Spiti Valley, shared washrooms with hot water provided in buckets are standard. This is a well-established norm in the region and not a reflection of accommodation quality
  • Room Configuration: Double or triple sharing throughout. Single occupancy is not available on group departures
  • Heating: Passive or limited heating only in remote areas. Thermals and a spare layer for sleeping are essential at every stay on this circuit

📱 Communication and Connectivity

  • Dead Zones: Chitkul, Nako, Gue, Lalung, Pin Valley, and all areas between Kaza and Chandratal have no reliable mobile connectivity. This is not a network issue — there is simply no infrastructure
  • Kaza: The only reliable connectivity point on the Spiti circuit beyond Shimla. Jio and BSNL both function here
  • Power Supply: Solar-dependent electricity in remote villages means charging is not always available. Fully charge all devices in Kaza and carry a power bank rated 10,000 mAh or above
  • Family Communication: Share the full Spiti Valley Full Circuit itinerary and expected blackout windows with family before departing Delhi. BackpackerXP provides emergency contact information before departure
  • Digital Detox: Treat the connectivity blackout as part of the experience, not an inconvenience

🏥 Safety and Emergency Protocols

  • Medical Infrastructure: Shimla, Kaza, and Manali have basic medical facilities. There are no hospitals or clinics in remote sections of the Spiti circuit between these points
  • On-Trip Medical Support: Each group carries a basic wilderness first aid kit and a portable oxygen cylinder operated by the Trip Captain
  • Trip Captain Authority: The BackpackerXP Trip Captain is a trained expedition leader with wilderness first aid certification. Their safety-related decisions — including itinerary changes, pace adjustments, and emergency protocols — are binding on all participants
  • Travel Insurance: Strongly recommended for all participants. Coverage should explicitly include high-altitude travel in Spiti Valley, emergency helicopter evacuation, and trip interruption
  • Group Protocol: Participants must not leave the group or explore independently in remote areas without informing the Trip Captain. This is a safety requirement, not a preference

💰 Financial Preparation

  • Cash is the Only Option Beyond Kaza: No ATMs function between Kaza and Manali. Withdraw a minimum of Rs 5,000 to 8,000 in Kaza to cover personal expenses, activities, and any unexpected requirements
  • Last ATM: Kaza town — withdrawing here is not optional. Plan accordingly
  • Contingency Budget: Carry an additional Rs 2,000 to 3,000 for weather-related extended stays, meal supplements, or emergency requirements
  • Manali Activities Budget: Adventure activities in Manali including paragliding, river rafting, and ATV rides are paid directly at the activity provider — budget Rs 1,500 to 3,000 depending on choices made
  • No Digital Payments in Remote Areas: UPI, cards, and wallets do not function in most of Kinnaur and Spiti Valley beyond Kaza

🎒 Packing and Gear Standards

  • Single Bag Policy: One 40 to 50 litre soft backpack per participant. This is a firm operational requirement for Tempo Traveller travel in mountain terrain — not a suggestion
  • Layering Protocol: Multiple thin thermal and insulating layers are significantly more effective than single heavy outerwear. Temperature variation on the Spiti Full Circuit can exceed 20°C between valley floor and pass altitude within the same day
  • Sleeping Bag: A sleeping bag rated for minus 10°C or lower is mandatory for Chandratal camping. Participants without an appropriate bag will not be permitted to camp
  • Hydration Gear: Insulated water bottles only above 4,000 m. Standard plastic bottles freeze at Kunzum Pass altitude and higher
  • UV Protection: High-altitude UV radiation in Spiti Valley is significantly more intense than at sea level. SPF 50+ sunscreen and quality UV-protected sunglasses are required — not optional
  • Power Management: Cold temperatures accelerate battery drain. Carry a fully charged 10,000 mAh power bank and spare batteries for cameras

🚨 Cancellation and Weather Policy

  • Operator-Initiated Changes: BackpackerXP reserves the right to modify or cancel the itinerary at any point where conditions present an unacceptable safety risk. Participant safety is the sole criterion for these decisions
  • Weather-Related Changes: No refunds are issued for itinerary modifications caused by weather, road closures, pass conditions, permit restrictions, or force majeure events
  • Participant Cancellation: Standard tiered cancellation charges apply from the time of booking confirmation. Review the full cancellation policy document before completing your booking
  • No-Show Policy: No refund is issued for no-shows or for participants who miss the departure due to late arrival
  • Trip Insurance Requirement: BackpackerXP strongly recommends trip interruption and medical insurance for all participants on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit

📋 Pre-Departure Requirements

  • Identity Documents: Original government-issued photo ID plus 2 photocopies are mandatory. Inner Line Permits for Kinnaur are verified against original ID at multiple checkposts — photocopies alone are not accepted
  • Health Declaration: Participants with pre-existing cardiac, respiratory, or hypertensive conditions must obtain a doctor's fitness certificate before the trip
  • Physical Preparation: Begin a basic fitness routine — walking, stair climbing, or light cardio — at least 2 to 3 weeks before departure
  • Pre-Trip Communication: All departure logistics, pickup points, packing updates, weather advisories, and emergency contacts are communicated exclusively through the BackpackerXP WhatsApp group. Joining the group before departure day is mandatory

🍽 Food and Dietary

  • Vegetarian Only: Only vegetarian food is available across most of Kinnaur and Spiti Valley. This is not a choice made by BackpackerXP — it is the standard food culture of the region
  • Included Meals: Breakfast and dinner are included at every stay. Lunch is not included — roadside dhabas, local tea stalls, and small eateries are available en route at most stops
  • Regional Food: Expect Himachali thali, dal rice, Maggi, paranthas, and seasonal local dishes. Continental, Chinese, and non-vegetarian options are not available in remote areas
  • Drinking Water: Carry an insulated bottle and refill at guesthouses, monasteries, and local sources. Commercially bottled water is not available at every stop on the Spiti circuit
  • Dietary Restrictions: Inform BackpackerXP at the time of booking. Basic adjustments can be made with advance notice but are not guaranteed in highly remote locations

⏰ Schedule and Punctuality

  • Departure Times: Most driving days on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit begin at 6:00 AM sharp. Late departures affect the entire group's sightseeing schedule and can compromise pass-crossing safety windows
  • Property Check-out: 11:00 AM check-out is enforced at all accommodations to maintain schedule integrity
  • Return Day Buffer: Do not book onward flights, trains, or commitments on Day 10 morning. Manali to Delhi overnight journeys are subject to highway delays — maintain a minimum 4-hour buffer from estimated Delhi arrival
  • Pass Timing: High-altitude passes on the Spiti circuit including Kunzum are best crossed in morning hours before afternoon cloud build-up and weather change. Group departure times are set accordingly

🔴 Important: The Spiti Valley Full Circuit is a genuine high-altitude expedition through one of India's most remote and logistically demanding regions. It is not a leisure tour and should not be approached as one. Roads close without warning. Passes are weather-dependent. Accommodation is basic in remote areas. Nights are cold. Medical infrastructure is minimal beyond the three main towns. BackpackerXP designs and operates this circuit with the highest standards of safety and experience quality — but the mountains set the final terms. Participants who arrive prepared, physically ready, mentally flexible, and genuinely respectful of the environment will have one of the most extraordinary travel experiences India offers.

Frequently asked questions

The Spiti Valley Full Circuit is the complete loop — entering via Shimla and Kinnaur and exiting via Kunzum Pass and Manali, or vice versa. The half circuit enters and exits from the same side, covering either Kinnaur and Spiti or Spiti and Lahaul but not the full loop. The full circuit is always the recommended option for anyone with 10 days available as it is the only way to see both the green Kinnaur valleys and the high-altitude Spiti desert in a single journey.

The Spiti Valley Full Circuit from Delhi covers approximately 1,800 to 2,000 km over 10 days and 9 nights, entering through Shimla and exiting through Manali via Kunzum Pass. The circuit itself from Shimla to Manali via Kaza is approximately 1,200 km through mountain terrain.

A minimum of 7 to 8 days is needed for a half circuit and 10 days for the complete Spiti Valley Full Circuit. This 10-day itinerary from Delhi is the most comprehensive version available, covering Kinnaur, core Spiti Valley, Pin Valley, Chandratal, and Manali without rushing any section.

Chandigarh to Kaza via the Kinnaur route is approximately 430 km and takes 12 to 14 hours by road. Chandigarh to Manali via Kunzum and Atal Tunnel is approximately 310 km. BackpackerXP's Spiti Full Circuit departs from Delhi and incorporates the Chandigarh highway stretch on the overnight Volvo journey to Shimla.

July and August offer the most stable weather and the highest probability of all roads and passes being open simultaneously. June is ideal for those who want fewer crowds and are comfortable with occasional snow on passes. September offers crisp skies and spectacular autumn light but carries a higher risk of early pass closures. The Spiti Valley Full Circuit is not recommended before mid-June or after early October.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real concern above 3,000 m in Spiti Valley. The symptoms — headache, nausea, dizziness, breathlessness — are caused by reduced oxygen at altitude, not the absence of oxygen. This Spiti Full Circuit is designed with a gradual ascent through Kinnaur to allow the body to acclimatise progressively. BackpackerXP carries an oxygen cylinder on every group departure. Carrying Diamox as advised by your doctor is strongly recommended.

Ascend gradually — which this route does by design. Stay well hydrated throughout the trip. Avoid alcohol for the first 3 to 4 days. Eat light meals. Sleep at a lower altitude than your highest point of the day where possible. Carry Diamox if your doctor recommends it. Report any symptoms to the Trip Captain immediately — do not self-medicate or ignore symptoms above 3,500 m.

Most Spiti Valley tour packages skip large sections of Kinnaur, rush past Pin Valley, and never visit Lalung, Kaurik, Kibbar, or Lingti Waterfall. This itinerary covers the genuinely complete circuit — including the Indo-Tibet border at Kaurik, Lalung Monastery, Mud Village in Pin Valley, Kibbar snow leopard habitat, and Lingti Waterfall — all destinations that most Spiti travellers never reach. It is the most thorough Spiti Valley Full Circuit available as a guided group tour from Delhi.

The stay mix covers the full range — Authentic Homestay in Kaza, Nako,   Guesthouses in Chitkul, and Dhankar, camping at Chandratal Lake, and a boutique offbeat stay at The Outpost Hallan Valley in Manali. Remote stays have basic but clean facilities — shared washrooms and bucket hot water are standard and expected in Spiti Valley homestays.

Absolutely. A significant proportion of most BackpackerXP Spiti Full Circuit batches are solo travellers. You are placed with a compatible group, share accommodation on twin or triple sharing, and travel together for the entire 10-day Spiti circuit. Single occupancy rooms are not available on group departures.

Accommodation in Tabo, Nako, Dhankar and Kaza is basic by urban standards. Most guesthouses provide blankets and some form of room heating. Electric heaters & Electric Mattresses, but available on extra cost. BackpackerXP selects the best available properties in these locations for each departure. Participants are advised to carry thermal innerwear and a fleece layer for sleeping regardless of the heating situation at the property.

Yes. Kalpa in Kinnaur is a core stop on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit route. It sits on the main approach road between Shimla and Kaza and offers some of the finest views of the Kinner Kailash range available from any roadside stop in Himachal Pradesh. Rushing through or skipping Kalpa is one of the most common mistakes made on shorter Spiti Valley itineraries.

Jimny, Journeys & Jaw-Dropping Views

Took on Spiti in our Jimny 4x4 with the Backpacker XP crew — and what a ride! Twisting roads, snow walls, river crossings, and endless laughter. The full circuit was raw, real, and ridiculously scenic. Every turn felt like a postcard. Spiti hits different when you're driving through it yourself.

Just Us & The Mountains

We did a private Spiti trip as a couple group, and it was beyond perfect. Backpacker XP crafted the journey exactly how we imagined—peaceful, scenic, and intimate. No crowds, just us, the wild roads, and surreal views. Every sunset felt personal, every stop felt curated. Couldn’t have asked for more.

From Tel Aviv to the Himalayas

Spiti was unlike anywhere we’ve been. As a couple from Israel, we were blown away by the raw beauty, peaceful vibe, and the care Backpacker XP put into everything. The landscapes felt like a dream, and the people made us feel right at home. A journey we’ll never forget.
