About this tour

The Full Circuit Spiti Valley A Himalayan Dream Expedition – 8 Nights / 9 Days

Most Spiti Valley tour packages follow the same compressed script. Rush through Kinnaur. Tick off Kaza. Skip Pin Valley. Miss Dhankar. Head home. And the traveller comes back having seen Spiti Valley but not having truly experienced it.

This is the Spiti Valley Full Circuit — and it is built on a completely different philosophy. Over 9 days and 8 nights, this is the most complete version of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit available anywhere. A route that covers Shimla sightseeing, the lush Sangla Valley, India’s last village at Chitkul, the panoramic ridgeline of Kalpa, the ancient river confluence at Khab Sangam, the mummified Lama at Gue, a thousand-year-old monastery at Tabo, an exclusive rooftop stargazing stay at an affiliated property in Dhankar with monastery views, the full depth of Pin Valley and Kungri Monastery, the complete Kaza village circuit, a morning at Chandratal Lake, and a final chapter at The Outpost Hallan — BackpackerXP’s own flagship property set in apple orchards in Hallan Valley, Manali. Every single day on this Spiti Valley Full Circuit earns its place.

What is the Spiti Valley Full Circuit?
The Spiti Valley Full Circuit is the complete loop — entering through Kinnaur via Shimla and exiting through Kunzum Pass into Manali, covering both sides of the valley in a single continuous journey. The half circuit enters and exits from the same side and covers only one half of the story. The full circuit is the only way to experience the green river valleys of Kinnaur, the ancient monasteries of Tabo and Dhankar, the high-altitude desert of core Spiti Valley, Pin Valley, Chandratal Lake, and the descent into Manali — all in one unbroken journey. This is that trip.

What makes this Spiti Valley Full Circuit itinerary different from everything else in the market is the quality of what fills the space between the famous stops. The exclusive Dhankar stay with monastery views and a rooftop under the stars is something almost no other operator offers. The Pin Valley detour through Kungri Monastery and the Sagnam riverside goes deeper than any standard Spiti Valley package. Shimla sightseeing on Day 1 means the trip begins properly rather than just passing through. And the final nights at The Outpost Hallan in Manali — a BackpackerXP flagship property surrounded by apple orchards in the quiet Hallan Valley — give the Spiti Valley Full Circuit an ending that genuinely matches the journey.

Is Kalpa part of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit?
Yes — and it is one of the most underrated stops on the entire route. The views of Kinner Kailash from Kalpa at dawn are among the finest mountain panoramas in Himachal Pradesh. Most cheap Spiti Valley packages rush past or skip Kalpa entirely. This itinerary does not.

How long is the Spiti Valley Full Circuit?
This complete Spiti Valley circuit covers approximately 1,800 to 2,000 km over 9 days and 8 nights from Chandigarh, entering through Kinnaur and exiting through Manali via Kunzum Pass. It is the most thorough Spiti Valley Full Circuit from Chandigarh available as a guided road trip.

The trip departs from Chandigarh ISBT Sector 43 or Books and Brews Cafe at 9:30 AM. A Delhi to Delhi option is available with an overnight Volvo or cab from Delhi on Day 0 and a return Volvo or cab from Manali on Day 9. Every detail of this Spiti Valley Full Circuit has been built to give you the most complete, most authentic, and most honestly memorable experience of the region.

Itinerary

<span> Day 0 </span> Delhi to Shimla — Join from Delhi 🌙 🚌

🌆 Evening Departure from Delhi:

  • 🚌 Board the Volvo 9600 from the designated Delhi pickup point
  • 🛣 Overnight highway drive through the Himalayan foothills
  • 📏 Distance: approximately 350 km · Duration: 9 to 10 hours

🌙 Overnight: On the Volvo bus
📝 Note: Keep your daypack accessible — do not put essentials in the luggage compartment. Carry a light blanket or neck pillow for the overnight journey. Departure is typically between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM — confirm exact timing in the WhatsApp group
Highlights: Departure energy, first glimpse of the foothills, getting to know fellow travellers

🌅 Morning Pickup:

  • 🚌 Pickup from Chandigarh ISBT Sector 43 or Books and Brews Cafe at 9:30 AM sharp
  • 🛣 Drive through the Shivalik foothills — the plains give way to pine forests and the road starts climbing almost immediately
  • 📏 Distance: approximately 115 km · Duration: 3 to 4 hours

🏙 Shimla Arrival and Sightseeing:

  • 🏨 Hotel check-in and freshen up
  • 🚶 Mall Road — Shimla's famous colonial promenade lined with old-world shops, cafés, and mountain character
  • 🏔 The Ridge — the wide, open promenade at the top of Shimla with unobstructed views across the surrounding Himalayan ranges
  • 🛕 Jakhu Temple — sunset from this hilltop Hanuman temple is one of Shimla's finest moments. The views over Shimla town and the surrounding pine forest at dusk are worth every step of the climb. A fitting first evening for a Spiti Valley Full Circuit

🍽 Meals: Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Boutique hotel in Shimla
📝 Note: This is an easy, well-paced first day — use it to settle in at ~2,200 m, eat light, and rest well before the long drive tomorrow. The Spiti Valley Full Circuit gets progressively more demanding and an early rest is a good investment. "Day 0 - Delhi Departure gang joins in Shimla this day"
Highlights: Shivalik hill drive, Mall Road, The Ridge, Jakhu Temple sunset

<span> Day 2 </span> Shimla to Sangla / Chitkul — The Kinnaur Highway 🌊 🏞

🌄 Early Morning Departure:

  • 🍳 Breakfast at hotel and check-out
  • 🚗 Depart Shimla early — a long drive through one of India's most scenic river highways and the first major leg of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 📏 Distance: approximately 200 km · Duration: 6 to 7 hours

🛣 Drive Through Kinnaur:

  • 🌲 Drive through Kufri and Narkanda — pine forests and apple country above Shimla
  • 🏙 Rampur — a brief market town stop before the Sutlej gorge takes over entirely
  • 🌊 Sutlej River highway — the road hugs the river gorge through Jeori and Karcham for hours. The water is turquoise, the gorge walls are sheer, and the scale is genuinely difficult to photograph adequately. This stretch is one of the great drives of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 🏞 Bhaba Valley viewpoint at Karcham Dam — where the Bhaba river joins the Sutlej, framed by a completely different set of mountains
  • 🏘 Optional short detour to Batseri village — a quiet, traditional Kinnauri settlement across the river from Sangla, barely touched by tourism

🏯 Evening in Sangla:

  • 🏯 Kamru Fort — a medieval wooden fort above Sangla Valley, built in a distinct Kinnauri architectural style and housing a temple dedicated to Kamakhya Devi. Rarely included on standard Spiti Valley Full Circuit itineraries but one of the finest heritage stops in Kinnaur. The views over the Sangla Valley floor from the fort are commanding and completely worth the short climb
  • 🌄 Settle into the homestay — the Sangla Valley at dusk, with the Baspa River audible from most guesthouses, is the kind of arrival that makes the long drive feel instantly worthwhile

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Homestay in Sangla or Chitkul
📝 Note: Roads through Kinnaur are narrow with sheer drops on one side for long sections. Motion sickness medication is strongly recommended. Keep your daypack accessible throughout the drive
Highlights: Kufri, Narkanda, Sutlej River gorge, Bhaba Valley view, Batseri village, Kamru Fort

<span> Day 3 </span> Sangla · Chitkul · Kalpa — The Last Village and the Great Range 🇮🇳 🏔

🌅 Morning in Chitkul:

  • 🍳 Traditional breakfast at the homestay
  • 🚗 Early drive up the Baspa Valley to Chitkul — the road follows the river through increasingly dramatic scenery
  • 🇮🇳 ChitkulIndia's last inhabited village before the Indo-Tibet border. Wooden homes with carved balconies, prayer flags strung across rooftops, a small temple at the edge of the settlement, and the Baspa River running cold and clear past the last cluster of houses before the border. This is genuinely the end of the Indian road — and one of the most memorable mornings on any Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 🚶 Riverside walk along the Baspa — unhurried, quiet, and completely worth the early start
  • 📸 Mountain photography at golden hour with Kinner Kailash as the backdrop

🚗 Drive to Kalpa:

  • 🚗 Return to Karcham and climb toward Powari and Reckong Peo
  • 🏔 Kalpa village — as the road gains altitude the Kinner Kailash range reveals itself across the valley in full. The scale of the face — snow-capped, vertical, and enormous — is something that photographs consistently fail to convey. Most standard Spiti Valley Full Circuit packages rush through or skip Kalpa entirely. This is a mistake this itinerary does not make
  • 🛕 Kalpa Monastery — a well-maintained Buddhist monastery with the great Kinner Kailash range as its unobstructed backdrop

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Homestay in Kalpa or Reckong Peo
📝 Note: Kalpa is best experienced at dawn or dusk when the light hits Kinner Kailash directly. If you arrive with time before dinner, find a spot facing the range and sit with it. No photograph will do what simply looking does
Highlights: Baspa River walk, Chitkul — India's last village on the Indo-Tibet border, Kinner Kailash views from Kalpa, Kalpa Monastery

🌅 Morning Departure from Kalpa:

  • 🍳 Breakfast and check-out
  • 🚗 Drive down from Kalpa toward Pooh and Khab — one of the most dramatic road descents on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 📏 Distance: approximately 180 km · Duration: 7 to 8 hours

🌊 Khab Sangam:

  • 🌊 Khab Sangam — the confluence of the Spiti and Sutlej rivers at the base of a dramatic gorge. The colour contrast between the two rivers — one milky grey, one turquoise — is clearly visible from the road above. This is the geographical and visual transition point where Kinnaur ends and Spiti begins. Beyond Khab, the green disappears entirely and the Trans-Himalayan desert of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit takes over

🪖 Shipki La Pass Sightseeing:

  • 🪖 Shipki La — an Indo-Tibet border pass at approximately 5,639 m on the Sutlej River route in Kinnaur, one of the least-visited and most remote border points in Himachal Pradesh. Sightseeing here is subject to weather conditions, administrative clearance from the Indian Army, and timing on the day — it is never guaranteed in advance. When access is permitted, this is one of the most exclusive and memorable stops on the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit. When it is not, the surrounding landscape and river gorge at this altitude are extraordinary in their own right

💀 Gue Monastery:

  • 💀 Gue Monastery — home to the remarkably preserved 500-year-old mummified body of a Buddhist Lama. Hair, teeth, and skin still largely intact. A genuinely singular encounter that exists nowhere else on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit

🛕 Tabo:

  • 🛕 Arrive at Tabo in the evening — a brief walk through the Tabo Monastery compound in the fading light. Founded in 996 AD, the atmosphere here at dusk is something the busier morning visit tomorrow will not fully replicate

🌌 Dhankar — The Exclusive Stay:

  • 🏯 Check-in at BackpackerXP's exclusive affiliated property in Dhankar — a guesthouse with direct Dhankar Monastery views that almost no other operator on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit offers access to
  • 🌌 Rooftop stargazingDhankar sits at approximately 3,894 m with zero light pollution, clear skies across most of the summer season, and the ancient monastery illuminated softly below. The rooftop here after dinner, looking up at a sky this dense with stars with the Dhankar Monastery in the frame below, is one of the genuinely unrepeatable moments of this entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Exclusive affiliated guesthouse in Dhankar (priority) · Tabo (secondary)
📝 Note: The Shipki La visit is confirmed on the morning of Day 4 based on administrative clearance received. Common washrooms with hot water buckets are standard at Dhankar altitude — this is expected and normal. The rooftop stargazing is weather-dependent — clear skies are most reliable in June, July, and early September
Highlights: Khab Sangam river confluence, Shipki La sightseeing, Gue mummified Lama, Tabo Monastery arrival, exclusive Dhankar rooftop stargazing with monastery views

<span> Day 5 </span> Tabo · Dhankar · Pin Valley · Kungri · Kaza — The Spiti Valley Full Circuit Goes Deeper 🏯 🌿

🌅 Morning at Tabo:

  • 🍳 Breakfast at the guesthouse
  • 🛕 Tabo Monastery — founded in 996 AD, one of the oldest continuously operating Buddhist monasteries in the world. The cave murals are in extraordinary condition for their age. The thangka paintings inside the main assembly hall are among the finest surviving examples of early Himalayan Buddhist art. A living monastic community still operates here — move quietly and take your time. No part of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit is more historically significant than this morning

🏯 Dhankar Monastery:

  • 🏯 Dhankar Monastery — perched on a crumbling cliff above the Spiti and Pin river confluence, one of the most dramatically situated monasteries in India. The view from the monastery courtyard down into both valleys simultaneously is the kind of thing that makes people stop mid-sentence

🌿 Pin Valley — The Section Most Spiti Valley Tours Skip:

  • 🌿 Pin Valley National Park — a lush, green corridor that feels completely unlike the arid Spiti desert surrounding it. The Pin River runs through a valley that is one of the best-known habitats for the snow leopard in India and home to the endangered Siberian ibex as well. Most standard Spiti Valley Full Circuit packages drive past the Pin Valley turnoff without stopping. This is exactly the kind of stop that separates a genuinely complete Spiti Valley Full Circuit from a highlights tour
  • 🛕 Kungri Monastery — a 14th-century monastery in Pin Valley, rarely crowded, rarely included on standard Spiti Valley itineraries, and quietly extraordinary in both its age and its atmosphere. If Tabo is the famous ancient monastery of Spiti, Kungri is the one that only properly curated Spiti Valley Full Circuit itineraries ever reach
  • 🌊 Sagnam riverside — a peaceful stretch along the Pin River before the final push to Kaza

🏙 Arrival in Kaza:

  • 🏙 Kaza — the administrative capital of Spiti Valley at 3,800 m and the central base of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 🛒 Explore the local market and the Sakya Monastery in town
  • 📶 Best mobile connectivity of the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit beyond Shimla — Jio and BSNL both work here
  • 💰 Withdraw cash at the Kaza ATM — this is the last ATM before Manali on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit. Do not skip this

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Homestay in Kaza
📝 Note: Withdraw a minimum of Rs 4,000 to 5,000 in Kaza without fail. No digital payments function in remote Spiti Valley areas and there are no ATMs between Kaza and Manali
Highlights: Tabo Monastery caves and murals, Dhankar cliff monastery, Pin Valley National Park, Kungri Monastery, Sagnam riverside

<span> Day 6 </span> Kaza Full Circuit — Key · Hikkim · Langza · Komic · Kibbar · Chicham 🛕 📮 🌉

🌅 Morning — The Iconic Monastery:

  • 🍳 Breakfast at homestay
  • 🏯 Key Monastery — the largest, most iconic, and most photographed monastery in Spiti Valley. Sitting at 4,166 m with the Spiti River snaking far below, it is the defining image of the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit. Attend a morning prayer session with monks if timing allows — the sound of horns and drums echoing through ancient halls is something that stays with you

🌄 The Highest Villages:

  • 📮 Hikkim — the world's highest post office at 4,440 m. It functions. Post a card to someone who will appreciate knowing exactly where it came from
  • 🦖 Langza — the fossil village of Spiti. Marine fossils embedded in the hillsides above 4,400 m tell the story of an ancient seabed that became the Himalayas. A giant Buddha statue overlooks the entire Spiti Valley floor. For families, fossil-hunting on the hillside is one of the most memorable activities on the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 🚀 Komic — one of the highest motorable villages in the world with a small functioning monastery and a view of the Spiti Valley floor that takes several seconds to fully process

🌉 The Bridge and the Village:

  • 🦌 Kibbar Village — one of the highest motorable villages in the world and one of India's best-known locations for snow leopard sightings. A living settlement at approximately 4,200 m where families have farmed barley and grazed animals at altitude for generations
  • 🌉 Chicham BridgeAsia's highest bridge, spanning a dramatic gorge between two sheer cliff faces at 4,450 m. Walk across slowly and look down exactly once

Evening — Kaza Town:

  • Café hopping in Kaza — the town has a small but genuinely good café culture that has developed around the Spiti Valley Full Circuit travel community. Local cafés serving good coffee, Himachali food, and the kind of slow conversation that only happens at altitude
  • 🛒 Market exploration — local handicrafts, monastery trinkets, woollen goods, and Spiti Valley souvenirs

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: Same homestay in Kaza
📝 Note: Most stops today are above 4,000 m. Move slowly, drink water consistently, and inform your driver immediately if you feel unwell. Rest well tonight — Day 7 is the most dramatic day of the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit and starts before dawn
Highlights: Key Monastery, Hikkim Post Office, Langza fossil village, Komic, Kibbar, Chicham Bridge, Kaza café culture and market

<span> Day 7 </span> Kaza · Chandratal Lake · Kunzum Pass · Batal · Manali — The Day Everything Peaks 🌊 🏔 🏡

This is the day the Spiti Valley Full Circuit reaches its most dramatic point — and then brings you home to something genuinely comfortable.

🌄 Early Departure from Kaza:

  • 🍳 Breakfast and check-out by 5:30 to 6:00 AM
  • 🚗 Drive toward Losar and then up toward Kunzum Pass — the highest point of the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 📏 Total distance: approximately 220 km to Manali · Duration: 9 to 10 hours with stops

🏔 Kunzum Pass (4,551 m):

  • 🛕 Brief stop at Kunzum Mata Temple — circle the temple clockwise before crossing. Most mountain drivers do this instinctively
  • 🌬 The highest point of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit — views of multiple glaciers on clear days and the full scale of the Spiti-Lahaul divide from above

🌊 Chandratal Lake — Late Morning Exploration:

  • 🌊 Chandratal — the Moon Lake at 4,300 m and one of the most iconic destinations on the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit. The access track from the main road is approximately 14 km on a rough surface — worth every bump
  • 🏕 Important context: The Chandratal campsites are located approximately 3 km before the lake — not on the lake banks. Camping directly at the lake is not permitted. The camps themselves are basic, heavily weather-exposed, and entirely dependent on conditions on the day. The lake, however, is extraordinary — crystal clear, intensely blue, ringed by snow peaks, and completely silent in the morning hours
  • 🌅 Spend the Late morning at the lake — walk the bank, photograph in the best light of the day, and absorb what is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in India
  • 📵 No mobile network and no electricity in this area — this is part of the experience, not an inconvenience
  • 🚫 Visitors are not permitted at the lake after 5:00 PM — the early departure from Kaza on this itinerary is designed precisely to get you here at the right time

🍛 Lunch at Batal — Chacha-Chachi Dhaba:

  • 🍛 Drive back out to the main road and stop at Chacha-Chachi Dhaba in Batal — the most famous roadside meal stop on any Spiti Valley Full Circuit. Dal, rice, and hot chai in the middle of a glacial moraine, surrounded by mountains on every side. Simple, earned, and completely unforgettable

🏡 Drive to Manali and The Outpost Hallan:

  • 🚗 Continue through Chhatru, Gramphu, Khoksar, and Sissu down through the Lahaul Valley
  • 🚇 Atal Tunnel9.2 km, the world's longest high-altitude road tunnel at 3,100 m, connecting Lahaul to the Kullu Valley. Temperature, vegetation, and landscape change noticeably the moment you exit on the south side — a fitting physical metaphor for the transition out of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit and back toward the world
  • 🏡 Arrive Manali and check in at The Outpost Hallan — BackpackerXP's own flagship property set in the middle of apple orchards in Hallan Valley, completely away from the noise and crowds of main Manali town. After seven days of remote homestays and high-altitude driving on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit, this is exactly the arrival the trip deserves

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: The Outpost Hallan, Hallan Valley, Manali
📝 Note: The early departure from Kaza is non-negotiable — Chandratal needs to be visited in the morning hours to get the best light, the quietest experience, and to respect the 5:00 PM lake closure. The day is long but the pacing is deliberate. By the time you arrive at The Outpost Hallan, the hot shower and comfortable bed feel completely earned
Highlights: Kunzum Pass, Chandratal Lake morning, Chacha-Chachi Dhaba at Batal, Atal Tunnel, The Outpost Hallan Valley arrival

<span> Day 8 </span> Manali — A Proper Last Day in the Mountains 🌊 🌅

After seven days of driving and altitude on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit, Day 8 is the trip's reward day — unhurried, varied, and ending exactly where it should.

🌅 Morning — Water and Warmth:

  • 🍳 Breakfast at The Outpost Hallan with apple orchard views and no schedule pressure
  • 🌊 Sajla Waterfall — a scenic natural waterfall near Hallan Valley, a gentle and easy morning start before the day's main stops
  • 🌊 Vashisht Hot Water Springs and Temple — natural geothermal springs in the village of Vashisht above Manali. Soaking in hot sulphur water after a week of cold mountain nights on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit is one of those experiences that feels almost medically necessary. The adjacent Vashisht Temple is a fine example of traditional Himachali wooden temple architecture

🏛 Afternoon — Manali's Best:

  • 🏛 Old Manali village walk — apple orchards, old homes converted into guesthouses and cafés, independent coffee shops, and a pace of life completely unlike the busy main town below. This is the Manali that travellers come back for
  • 🛕 Hadimba Devi Temple — a remarkable wooden temple built in 1553 in a deodar cedar forest. One of the finest examples of Himachali temple architecture in the region, set in a forest clearing with a distinctly different character from every other religious site on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • 🚶 Mall Road, Manali — a leisurely last stroll for anyone who wants to pick up Kullu woolens, dry fruits, local art, or final souvenirs before the journey home

🌅 Evening at The Outpost Hallan:

  • 🌄 Sunset hike from The Outpost Hallan — the property's position in Hallan Valley gives access to a short trail with sweeping views across the Beas Valley and the surrounding ranges at golden hour
  • 🌲 Evening at the property — the apple orchards, the mountain air, and the quiet of Hallan Valley after the sounds of the day is the right way to close out a Spiti Valley Full Circuit

🍽 Meals: Breakfast and Dinner included
🛏 Overnight Stay: The Outpost Hallan, Hallan Valley, Manali
📝 Note: Day 8 has no fixed schedule and no altitude pressure — it is intentionally flexible. Take as much or as little of each stop as you want. The sunset hike from The Outpost Hallan is approximately 45 minutes return
Highlights: Sajla Waterfall, Vashisht Hot Water Springs and Temple, Old Manali, Hadimba Temple, Mall Road stroll, sunset hike at The Outpost Hallan

Leisure Morning at The Outpost Hallan · Afternoon Onward Journey 🚌 🏙

🌅 Morning at The Outpost Hallan:

  • 🍳 Leisure breakfast at the property — apple orchard views, one last coffee, and no schedule
  • 🌲 Free time at The Outpost Hallan until check-out — walk the orchards, rest, or sit with the mountains one last time before the Spiti Valley Full Circuit closes
  • 🧳 Pack up and check out at a relaxed pace

🚌 Afternoon Onward Journey — Choose Your Route:

🕔 Drop to Manali bus stand in the evening for onward journey

Option A — Manali to Delhi Direct (Overnight Volvo option choosers):

  • 🚌 Overnight Volvo or cab from Manali to Delhi — arrive Delhi next morning
  • 📏 Distance: approximately 540 km · Duration: 12 to 14 hours
  • Book through BackpackerXP at the time of Spiti Valley Full Circuit booking for confirmed seats

Option B — Afternoon Transfer Manali to Chandigarh :

  • 🚗 Transfer from Manali to Chandigarh (approximately 7 to 8 hours)
  • Suitable for those with flights or trains departing from Chandigarh

🍽 Meals: Breakfast included
📝 Note: Do not book early morning flights or trains from Delhi on the morning after Day 9. Overnight Volvo arrivals from Manali are subject to highway traffic and seasonal delays — keep a minimum 4-hour buffer for any onward connection, next day from Delhi
The Spiti Valley Full Circuit is complete. Nine days. 4 valleys. Shimla Valley. Kinnaur Valley. Pin Valley. Spiti Valley. Kullu Valley. Come back.

🌡️ Weather and Temperature

  • Summer Days (June to September): 5°C to 20°C across Spiti Valley. Days are pleasant but evenings cool sharply at altitude — even in July
  • Nights: Minus 5°C to minus 10°C at elevations above 4,000 m even in peak summer. Layered thermals are non-negotiable on every night of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • Chandratal Area: No camping on this itinerary — the morning visit is timed to get the best of the lake without the exposure of an overnight camp stay. See Day 7 for full context
  • Weather Dependency: Road conditions, pass accessibility, and sightseeing availability on the Spiti Full Circuit are entirely weather-dependent. Route adjustments are made in the interest of safety — these decisions are final and non-negotiable

🏔 Altitude and Acclimatisation

  • Gradual Ascent: This Spiti Valley Full Circuit itinerary is structured for safe acclimatisation — starting at Shimla (~2,200 m), gaining altitude steadily through Kinnaur, and entering core Spiti Valley only after several days of gradual adjustment
  • Maximum Altitude: 4,551 m at Kunzum Pass. Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) — headache, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite — are possible above 3,000 m and must be reported to the driver or trip leader immediately
  • Diamox: Widely recommended by doctors for high-altitude travel on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit. Consult your physician before the trip and carry it with a prescription if advised
  • Medical Fitness: This Spiti Valley Full Circuit is not suitable for participants with serious cardiac, pulmonary, or hypertensive conditions
  • Fitness Requirement: Participants should be able to walk 3 to 5 km on uneven terrain without difficulty. No technical trekking experience required for the Spiti Full Circuit

🚗 Road and Transportation

  • Vehicle: Comfortable private vehicle throughout the Spiti Valley Full Circuit — AC operational on plains, not used in mountain terrain as per standard practice and safety protocol
  • Road Conditions: Kinnaur and Spiti Valley roads are narrow, unmetalled in sections, and carry real exposure on one side for long stretches. These are active PWD and BRO mountain roads — not tourist highways. Motion sickness medication is recommended for sensitive travellers
  • Road Closures: Kunzum Pass and Kinnaur sections of the Spiti Full Circuit can close without notice due to snowfall, landslides, or BRO operations. Alternative routing or extended stays may be required
  • Luggage Policy: One 40 to 50 litre soft backpack per participant strongly recommended. Oversized luggage creates real logistical problems in mountain vehicles on narrow Spiti Valley roads

🏠 Accommodation Standards

  • Stay Mix on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit: Boutique hotel in Shimla, village homestays in Sangla/Chitkul, Kalpa, and Kaza, exclusive affiliated guesthouse at Dhankar with monastery views and rooftop stargazing, flagship stay at The Outpost Hallan Valley, Manali
  • Dhankar Exclusive Stay: BackpackerXP's affiliated property in Dhankar offers direct Dhankar Monastery views and a rooftop stargazing setup that is not available through standard booking channels. This is one of the most distinctive overnight experiences available on any Spiti Valley Full Circuit itinerary
  • Remote Area Standards: Homestays in Sangla, Kalpa, and Kaza offer clean, basic accommodation consistent with their remote location. Do not expect urban hotel standards at these properties
  • Common Facilities: Shared washrooms with hot water provided in buckets are standard at high-altitude stays in Spiti Valley. This is a well-established norm in the region and not a quality issue
  • The Outpost Hallan: BackpackerXP's own flagship property in Hallan Valley surrounded by apple orchards — comfortable, characterful, and a complete contrast to the standard Manali hotel experience
  • Heating: Limited or no central heating in remote areas of the Spiti circuit. Thermals and a spare layer for sleeping are essential throughout

📱 Communication and Connectivity

  • Dead Zones on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit: Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa, Nako, Gue, Tabo, Dhankar, Pin Valley, and the Chandratal area have no reliable mobile connectivity
  • Kaza: The only reliable connectivity point on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit beyond Shimla — Jio and BSNL both work here
  • Chandratal Area: Absolutely no network in the lake access area. Charge all devices in Kaza before the Day 7 departure
  • Power Supply: Charge all devices fully in Kaza and carry a fully charged power bank at all times from this point onward
  • Family Communication: Share the full Spiti Valley Full Circuit itinerary and expected blackout windows with family before departure. The driver carries emergency contact information throughout

🏥 Safety and Emergency Protocols

  • Medical Infrastructure: Shimla, Kaza, and Manali have basic medical facilities. No hospitals or clinics in remote sections of the Spiti Valley Full Circuit between these towns
  • On-Trip Support: Basic first aid kit and oxygen cylinder available on all Spiti Valley Full Circuit departures
  • Driver Competence: All vehicles operated by experienced mountain drivers with working knowledge of Kinnaur and Spiti Valley road conditions
  • Travel Insurance: Strongly recommended for all participants on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit. Coverage should include high-altitude travel in Spiti Valley, emergency helicopter evacuation, and trip interruption
  • Solo Movement: Do not explore remote areas alone without informing the driver

💰 Financial Preparation

  • Cash Only Beyond Kaza on the Spiti Full Circuit: No ATMs between Kaza and Manali. Withdraw a minimum of Rs 5,000 to 8,000 in Kaza
  • Last ATM: Kaza town — this is not optional on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit. Withdraw before leaving Kaza
  • Contingency Budget: Carry Rs 2,000 to 3,000 extra for unexpected stays, meals, or requirements
  • Activities Budget: Cable car and adventure activities in Manali are paid directly — budget Rs 1,500 to 3,000 if planning to participate
  • No Digital Payments in Remote Areas: UPI and cards do not function in most of Kinnaur and Spiti Valley beyond Kaza

🎒 Packing and Gear

  • Layering: Multiple thin thermal and fleece layers outperform a single heavy jacket on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit — temperature variation between valley and pass can exceed 20°C in the same day
  • Insulated Water Bottle: Standard plastic bottles freeze above 4,000 m on the Spiti circuit. Insulated bottles only from Kunzum Pass altitude onward
  • UV Protection: SPF 50+ sunscreen and UV-protected sunglasses are non-negotiable at Spiti Valley altitude. UV radiation at these elevations is significantly more intense than at sea level
  • Head Torch: Essential for any evening movement at remote stays with limited electricity on the Spiti Full Circuit
  • Power Bank: Cold temperatures drain batteries rapidly. Carry a fully charged 10,000 mAh power bank and spare camera batteries throughout the Spiti Valley Full Circuit

🚨 Cancellation and Weather Policy

  • Weather Changes: No refunds for itinerary modifications caused by weather, road closures, pass conditions, or force majeure events on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • Shipki La and Border Visits: Subject to administrative clearance on the day — not guaranteed in advance and not refundable if unavailable
  • Participant Cancellation: Standard tiered cancellation charges apply from confirmation — review the full policy before booking the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • Trip Insurance: Strongly recommended for all participants

📋 Pre-Departure Requirements

  • ID Mandatory: Original government-issued photo ID plus 2 photocopies. Inner Line Permits for Kinnaur on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit are verified at multiple checkposts — original ID required at each point
  • Health Declaration: Participants with pre-existing cardiac, respiratory, or hypertensive conditions must obtain a doctor's fitness clearance before the Spiti Full Circuit
  • Physical Preparation: Begin basic cardio and walking 2 to 3 weeks before departure
  • Pre-Trip Communication: All logistics, pickup details, packing updates, and route advisories shared via WhatsApp before departure day. Joining the group before departure is mandatory

🍽 Food and Dietary

  • Vegetarian Only: Only vegetarian food available across most of Kinnaur and Spiti Valley on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • Included Meals: Breakfast and dinner at every stay. Lunch is not included — roadside dhabas and local tea stalls are available at most stops on the Spiti Full Circuit
  • Regional Food: Expect Himachali thali, dal rice, Maggi, paranthas, and seasonal local dishes. Continental and non-vegetarian options not available in remote areas
  • Drinking Water: Carry an insulated bottle and refill at guesthouses and local sources. Bottled water not reliably available at every stop on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit
  • Dietary Restrictions: Inform BackpackerXP at the time of booking the Spiti circuit

⏰ Schedule and Punctuality

  • Pickup: 9:30 AM sharp from Chandigarh ISBT Sector 43 or Books and Brews Cafe. Late arrivals may need to make their own way to the first stop
  • Early Starts: Most driving days on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit begin between 6:00 and 7:00 AM. Late departures eat into sightseeing time and can compromise pass-crossing safety windows
  • Chandratal Timing: The Day 7 lake visit is done in the morning hours to ensure arrival at the right time and respect the mandatory 5:00 PM lake closure
  • Return Buffer: Do not book early morning flights or trains from Delhi on the morning after Day 9. Keep a minimum 4-hour buffer from estimated arrival time

🔴 Important: The Spiti Valley Full Circuit is a genuine high-altitude expedition through one of India's most remote and logistically demanding regions. Roads close without warning. Passes are weather-dependent. Accommodation is basic in remote areas. Some nights are genuinely cold. Medical infrastructure is minimal beyond the three main towns. This trip is planned and operated with the highest standards of safety, local knowledge, and route experience — but the mountains set the final terms. Come prepared, stay flexible, and the Spiti Valley Full Circuit will be one of the finest travel experiences of your life.

Frequently asked questions

The Spiti Valley Full Circuit is the complete loop — entering through Kinnaur via Shimla and exiting through Kunzum Pass into Manali, covering both the green river valleys of Kinnaur and the high-altitude desert of core Spiti Valley in a single unbroken journey. The half circuit enters and exits from the same side and covers only one half of the route. The Spiti Valley Full Circuit is always the recommended option for anyone with 9 to 10 days available — it is the only way to see the complete picture.

This Spiti Valley Full Circuit covers the complete route in 9 days from Chandigarh, including Shimla sightseeing, Kinnaur, Pin Valley, Chandratal, and Manali. A minimum of 9 to 10 days is required to do the Spiti Full Circuit properly without rushing any section. A Delhi to Delhi Spiti Valley Full Circuit option is available with overnight Volvo or cab on both legs.

Pickup is from Chandigarh ISBT Sector 43 or Books and Brews Cafe, Chandigarh at 9:30 AM sharp on Day 1. For the Delhi to Delhi Spiti Valley Full Circuit option, an overnight Volvo or cab departs Delhi on Day 0 and arrives in Shimla in time for the Day 1 itinerary.

Yes — and it is one of the most underrated stops on the entire Spiti Valley Full Circuit. Kalpa sits directly on the approach road between Shimla and Kaza in Kinnaur and offers some of the finest views of Kinner Kailash available from any accessible stop in Himachal Pradesh. Most cheap Spiti Valley packages skip or rush through Kalpa. This Spiti Full Circuit itinerary does not.

BackpackerXP has an exclusive affiliated property in Dhankar that offers direct Dhankar Monastery views and a rooftop for stargazing at approximately 3,894 m — an experience that almost no other operator on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit provides access to. The night sky at Dhankar with zero light pollution and the illuminated monastery below is one of the most distinctive moments of this entire Spiti circuit.

This Spiti Valley Full Circuit itinerary visits Chandratal Lake in the morning hours on Day 7 rather than camping overnight. The campsites are approximately 3 km before the lake — not on the banks. Visitors are not permitted at the lake after 5:00 PM. There is no mobile network and no electricity in the area. The morning timing is designed precisely to get the best light, the quietest experience, and the right conditions at Chandratal — then continue to The Outpost Hallan in Manali for a genuinely comfortable overnight stay.

Ascend gradually — which this route does by design. Stay well hydrated throughout the trip. Avoid alcohol for the first 3 to 4 days. Eat light meals. Sleep at a lower altitude than your highest point of the day where possible. Carry Diamox if your doctor recommends it. Report any symptoms to the Trip Captain immediately — do not self-medicate or ignore symptoms above 3,500 m.

Shipki La is an Indo-Tibet border pass at approximately 5,639 m on the Sutlej River route in Kinnaur — one of the least-visited border points in Himachal Pradesh. The visit on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit is subject to weather conditions, administrative clearance from the Indian Army, and timing on the day. It is never guaranteed in advance. When access is permitted, it is one of the most exclusive stops on the Spiti Full Circuit. When it is not, the surrounding landscape is extraordinary in its own right.

The stay mix covers the full range — Authentic Homestay in Kaza, Nako,   Guesthouses in Chitkul, and Dhankar, camping at Chandratal Lake, and a boutique offbeat stay at The Outpost Hallan Valley in Manali. Remote stays have basic but clean facilities — shared washrooms and bucket hot water are standard and expected in Spiti Valley homestays.

Absolutely. A significant proportion of most BackpackerXP Spiti Full Circuit batches are solo travellers. You are placed with a compatible group, share accommodation on twin or triple sharing, and travel together for the entire 10-day Spiti circuit. Single occupancy rooms are not available on group departures.

The Outpost Hallan is BackpackerXP's own flagship property in Hallan Valley, Manali — a boutique stay set in the middle of apple orchards, away from the noise of main Manali town. It is the right way to close out a Spiti Valley Full Circuit — comfortable, characterful, and genuinely different from a standard hotel. The property offers a sunset hike and a relaxed evening in the orchards as part of the Day 8 programme.

The Spiti Valley Full Circuit ends with an evening drop to Manali bus stand on Day 9. Two return options are available — an overnight Volvo or cab directly from Manali to Delhi, or a cab from Manali to Chandigarh with an onward Volvo or cab connection to Delhi. Both can be arranged through BackpackerXP at the time of booking.

The last ATM on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit is in Kaza. Withdraw a minimum of Rs 5,000 to 8,000 in Kaza for all personal expenses between Kaza and Manali. No UPI, cards, or digital payments function in remote Kinnaur or Spiti Valley areas beyond Kaza. Budget additionally for monument entry fees and optional activities.

Yes. The gradual ascent via Shimla and Kinnaur on this Spiti Valley Full Circuit is specifically designed to allow the body to adjust before reaching the highest sections of Spiti Valley. No prior trekking or high-altitude experience is required. Basic fitness — the ability to walk 3 to 5 km on uneven terrain — and a willingness to adapt are what actually matter on the Spiti Valley Full Circuit.

This Spiti Valley Full Circuit includes Shimla Sightseeing, Shipki La border sightseeing, Kamru Fort in Sangla, Kalpa and Kinner Kailash views, Khab Sangam confluence, Pin Valley National Park, Kungri Monastery, Sagnam riverside, exclusive Dhankar monastery view stay with rooftop stargazing, Kibbar Village snow leopard habitat, Chicham Bridge, and a morning at Chandratal Lake — all stops that most standard Spiti Valley tour packages skip, rush through, or never include at all.

Jimny, Journeys & Jaw-Dropping Views

Took on Spiti in our Jimny 4x4 with the Backpacker XP crew — and what a ride! Twisting roads, snow walls, river crossings, and endless laughter. The full circuit was raw, real, and ridiculously scenic. Every turn felt like a postcard. Spiti hits different when you're driving through it yourself.

Just Us & The Mountains

We did a private Spiti trip as a couple group, and it was beyond perfect. Backpacker XP crafted the journey exactly how we imagined—peaceful, scenic, and intimate. No crowds, just us, the wild roads, and surreal views. Every sunset felt personal, every stop felt curated. Couldn’t have asked for more.

From Tel Aviv to the Himalayas

Spiti was unlike anywhere we’ve been. As a couple from Israel, we were blown away by the raw beauty, peaceful vibe, and the care Backpacker XP put into everything. The landscapes felt like a dream, and the people made us feel right at home. A journey we’ll never forget.
